Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are essential for modern connectivity but come with inherent security issues that require effective monitoring solutions. Open-source tools such as Wireshark, Kismet, PRTG, Nagios, and Ettercap offer affordable alternatives to commercial products, yet their scattered features leave network admins without clear guidance for complete deployment. This study systematically assesses these tools across five key monitoring areas: discovery, mapping, monitoring, alerting, and reporting- in a controlled WLAN setting. The findings show that no single tool covers all functions thoroughly: PRTG and Nagios deliver enterprise-level automation but need paid licenses, while Wireshark and Kismet are strong in packet and wireless analysis but lack built-in alerting and reporting capabilities. Ettercap is useful for niche security testing but is limited in overall monitoring. The study underscores the importance of integrating tools, suggesting specific combinations (such as Wireshark with Nagios for small networks, PRTG for larger ones) and revealing gaps in current open-source solutions. These insights help administrators make informed choices and guide future efforts toward unified, comprehensive WLAN monitoring frameworks.
